Sherman Greene
Sherman, one of Winchester’s elder statesmen, is now 91 years young, sharp as a tack and physically fit. He was born on Second Street in Winchester. During the Great Depression, Sherman, his brother and two sisters went to live with relatives for a time. He came back to Winchester to start school at Oliver Street. His most memorable teachers were Miss Missouri Quisenberry (later Bluster) and Mrs. Mildred Henderson. During high school he worked at many of the drugstores in town. At the end of World War II, at age 16, Sherman enlisted in the military. He spent three years in the Army Corps of Engineers, serving in postwar Philippines and Guam as well as a number of stateside postings. After the military, he attended West Kentucky Vocational School in Paducah. He worked for a time in shoe repair, then spent thirty years at the Army Depot at Avon. Sherman married Ann Chambers in 1951; they have three daughters: Janice, Juanita and Natalie. He is now living in Lexington, now retired but still active (he bowls weekly in a senior’s league!).
