African American Heritage Trail
Introduction
African Americans have been present in Clark County since its first exploration in 1775. The history of whites here has been extensively documented and presented to the public. However, our black history is mostly missing. This project addresses that vacuum with a series of educational signs highlighting various aspects of the local black community.
This signage program and its content was created by the Winchester Black History and Heritage Committee in an effort to further document and illustrate achievements of the local black community. There are 8 interpretive signs covering different topics
An orientation map behind the Clark County Courthouse on Wall Street shows the subject and location of each sign.
The Winchester Black History and Heritage Committee worked closely on this project with the Bluegrass Heritage Museum.
The project was generously funded by
Greater Clark Foundation
and
Kentucky Bank.
