SPOTLIGHT ON MEMBERS
Jane Burnam - Storyteller
Jane Burnam is a GRC graduate who earned an Elementary Education degree with a minor in Music from Morehead State University in 1969. She also completed graduate work in Early Childhood Education at Eastern Kentucky University. Jane is a retired educator, having taught not only in Winchester but also in Ohio and New York City. She is an active member of the Winchester Black History and Heritage Committee and has been involved in various educational activities related to Black History Month. In 2019, she participated as a model in the project "Of Thee I Sing." Jane is also a member of First Baptist Church, where she has shared her talent as a church organist and has served as the Minister of Music in several churches in Kentucky and Ohio. Additionally, she is a proud mother to her daughter, Narcissus, and a doting grandmother to two granddaughters, Skylynn (19) and Save'yah (8)
Jane told her story, “FANNIE COLE: A Most Enterprising Woman," at "The Voices of Winchester: A Night of Storytelling" on Friday, October 6th at 7:30 p.m. at Leeds Center for the Arts!
Joyce Morton Honored
Joyce Morton was inducted in the Inaugural 2023 class of The Clark County Public Schools Hall of Fame on August 18,2023. Induction in the CCPS Hall of Fame is reserved for those individuals who have significantly influenced Clark County‘s exceptional programs and/or become distinguished graduate after leaving CCPS. Their contributions will be chronicled in the halls of George Rogers Clark High School for our next graduates to inspire to emulate their accomplishments.
Joyce is an active member of her community and a well-known leader in civil rights activism. She is the founder of The Winchester Black History and Heritage Committee (WBBHC). As a result of her last community program, “Prayer Vigil “Heritage Park (community coming together to pray for students, parents, and school administrators), the African-American Ministers coalition was formed.
Joyce is married to Eugene Morton and celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary in July. The Morton’s have three children: Eugenia, Darrell and Dwayne Morton. They are blessed with eight grandchildren.
A few highlights of Joyce’s life are: As a sophomore at GRC, participated in 1964 March on Frankfort, KY (led by Dr.Martin Luther King Jr.)
