Dr. Gladys West: The Black Woman Behind GPS Technology ...
Dr. Gladys West: The Black Woman Behind GPS Technology. GPS or the Global Positioning System is something that we use every day. From finding your local supermarket, checking your directions if you get lost or mapping out your daily commute to avoid traffic, GPS is with us everywhere we go. It has literally changed the way we work, play and live. While billions of people use GPS in their car or on their phone, many don’t know that a Black woman is behind the creation of it.
The month of March is recognized as Women’s History Month and is dedicated to the celebration of everyday women, as well as pillars and innovators whose achievement have allowed for the following generations to feel empowered to break barriers. It has been observed annually in the United States since 1987.
The Winchester Black History & Heritage Committee salutes Winchester's pathfinders and groundbreakers and affirm PresidentᅠBarack Obama 's 2016 Women’s History Month Presidential Proclamation: “In the face of discrimination and undue hardship, they have never given up on the promise of America: that with hard work and determination, nothing is out of reach. During Women’s History Month, we remember the trailblazers of the past, including the women who are not recorded in our history books, and we honor their legacies by carrying forward the valuable lessons learned from the powerful examples they set.”

Finding a Founding Mother
The Winchester Black History & Heritage Committee is thrilled to honor Professional Black Women in April. All of these women are Winchester Natives. We could not be prouder of what these high achieving professional women have achieved and what they have been able to accomplish in such a short amount of time.
It is one thing to have dreams, but it is another to act and turn those dreams into reality. These young ladies are not only dreamers, but they are also doers. We congratulate each one on all their achievements! We will continue to be here watching and rooting for each of these phenomenal women and feel privileged to watch their journey.
Our stories for Women’s History Month come from around the country via many websites.
