HILLCREST CEMETERY
Hillcrest Cemetery is located on the west side of Venable Road, at the site formerly occupied by the Pine Grove Colored Baptist Church. The church acquired the property there in 1872 and established an adjoining graveyard. Some years later the church was renamed Gentile Baptist Church and moved to Winchester. The church burial grounds was expanded and used as Hillcrest Cemetery under the management of the Mance family, who also operated Haggard and Sons Funeral Home in Winchester. After the death of Arthur and Juanita Mance, the cemetery continued to be used but was not maintained and got into poor condition.
The Clark County Cemetery Board received a $12,000 grant to clean and restore the cemetery grounds. The project was completed in 2007.
In 2012 Bobby L. Bratton and Billy Lewis Jr. photographed and recorded all the gravestones at Hillcrest. They also found additional names from death certificates that list burial at Hillcrest but for which no gravestone can be found. Their list may be viewed at Hillcrest Cemetery Burials (link below).
The cemetery is also documented on Find-A-Grave and may be viewed at Hillcrest Cemetery. This site includes grave photographs, plus additional names of burials not listed by Bratton and Lewis.
